How to Create a Custom iOS Shortcut to Find Your Lost iPhone Automatically

Losing your iPhone is an immediate recipe for panic. While Apple’s native “Find My” app is incredibly useful, it relies on you having another Apple device nearby or remembering your iCloud password to log in via a web browser.

What if you could track your misplaced phone simply by sending it a secret text message from a friend’s device? By using the built-in iOS Shortcuts app, you can build a powerful, automated emergency backup plan.

Here is exactly how to set up a custom “Lost iPhone” trigger that forces your device to maximize its visibility the moment it receives a specific keyword.

Why Build a Custom Tracking Shortcut?

  • Zero Dependency on iCloud Logins: No need to handle two-factor authentication codes on a secondary screen just to find your device.
  • Maximum Battery Preservation: Automatically shifts your phone into survival mode so it stays powered on longer while you hunt for it.
  • Overrides Silent Settings: Forces your phone to blare sounds at maximum volume, even if you left it on silent or “Do Not Disturb.”

Part 1: Building the “Lost iPhone” Shortcut

First, we need to create the specific chain of actions your iPhone will take when triggered.

  1. Launch the Shortcuts app on your iPhone.
  2. Tap the “+” (plus) icon in the top-right corner to start a new project.
  3. Rename the shortcut at the top to something clear, like Lost iPhone.
  4. Tap Add Action and search for the following commands, adding them to your script in this exact order:
    • Set Wi-Fi: Set to On. (Crucial for accurate location triangulation)
    • Set Bluetooth: Set to On. (Allows tracking via nearby accessory networks)
    • Set Low Power Mode: Set to On. (Drops background power drain immediately)
    • Set Volume: Adjust the slider to 100%.
    • Get Current Location: Set the accuracy parameter to Current Location (Best Accuracy).
    • Send Message: Choose the dynamic “Current Location” variable as the message content, and select a trusted friend, family member, or partner as the recipient.

⚙️ Important Automation Tweak In the settings block of your Send Message action step, make sure to uncheck “Show When Run”. This allows the shortcut to gather and text out your location completely in the background without requiring a physical screen tap on the lost device.

Part 2: Creating the Secret Keyword Trigger

Now that the actions are built, we need to tell iOS to run them automatically whenever a specific text message is received.

  1. Inside the Shortcuts app, navigate to the Automation tab at the bottom menu.
  2. Tap Create Personal Automation (or the “+” icon if you already have existing automations).
  3. Scroll down and select Message as your initial event trigger.
  4. Configure the trigger rules:
    • Sender: Select the same trusted contact you used in Part 1.
    • Message Contains: Type your secret emergency keyword (for example: FindMyPhone or Lost).
    • Run Options: Select Run Immediately so the phone doesn’t wait for your permission to execute.
  5. Tap Next, and link this automation directly to your newly created Lost iPhone shortcut.

Put It to the Test

With everything configured, give your trusted contact the secret keyword. If you ever misplace your device under a couch cushion or leave it behind at a cafe, have them text that exact phrase to your number. Your phone will instantly kick into high-efficiency mode, crank its volume up, and text its live GPS coordinates right back to them
